This is a dessert that my aunt always made for family get togethers, and I haven't had it in years. I thought it would be a good one to check out for our party. I found the recipe online, and made a batch. The one thing I changed was to melt the chocolate/peanut butter mixture in the microwave. It was much quicker and easier than doing it on the stovetop. It turned out great! It's something that everyone I knew in the Midwest grew up with, but all of my east coast friends were a little skeptical of it. Luckily, one of Dino's coworkers' girlfriends was from Michigan, and she was really glad to see Puppy Chow, and got everyone interested in trying it...and they were glad they did!

Yield 2 to 3 dozen
9 cups crispy rice cereal squares
1/2 cup peanut butter
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
1. In a saucepan over low heat, melt the chocolate; add peanut butter and mix until smooth.
2. Remove from heat, add cereal and stir until coated.
3. Pour powdered sugar into large plastic bag, add coated cereal and shake until well coated. Store in airtight container.

Mmmmm Puppy chow is a staple around these parts! I have a friend who always brings puppy chow to our get togethers and I always end up eating about 5 cups of it! :)
ReplyDeletei always knew them as muddy buddies, great recipe, but i am adamantly opposed to the name puppy chow, as i am the word 'pop' when used in a soda context
ReplyDelete@Anonymous... yes that is true they are called Muddy Buddies, but puppy chow lacks an ingredient that muddy buddies has, which is margarine so Puppy Chow is the correct term.

ReplyDeleteAnonymous- if its just peanuts you're allergic to, you could try almond butter with it...if it's all nuts in general it should work fine. There is also a good white choc/lemon "puppy chow" recipe on the Chex site. look up Chex Lemon Buddy recipe and you'll find it. Also delicious.

ReplyDeleteI'm not sure why the author of this recipe wrote 2 to 3 dozen...it makes a big bowl that's great for a party. It's 9 cups of cereal...people could easily eat 1/2 cup each (and that's showing restraint, since this stuff is addictive!). I hope that helps!

That's not true, I never use any kind of butter to make this and it always turns out great.

ReplyDeleteFor people who are allergic to nuts there is a product called sunbutter it is made from sunflower seeds it is very similar in taste to peanut butter.
